PUTRAJAYA, 8 June 2026 – The Minister of Economy, YB Tuan Haji Akmal Nasrullah Haji Mohd Nasir, has called on the Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation (MPRC) to take a stronger lead in helping Malaysian oil and gas services and equipment (OGSE) companies expand beyond the domestic market and build long-term industry resilience.
The call was made during the National OGSE Industry Blueprint 2021–2030 Implementation Steering Committee Meeting, chaired by the Minister today. The meeting reviewed the progress of the Blueprint’s implementation and discussed ways to strengthen the competitiveness of Malaysian OGSE companies in international markets.
YB Tuan Haji Akmal Nasrullah said recent geopolitical developments in West Asia showed the importance of preparing the OGSE industry to face uncertainty while also positioning local companies to capture new opportunities when recovery and rebuilding efforts begin.
“The geopolitical crisis in West Asia is a reminder that our OGSE industry must be ready for uncertainty. But at the same time, when recovery and rebuilding begin, new opportunities will emerge. Malaysian OGSE companies must be ready to move early, compete confidently and deliver value beyond our shores,” he said.
The Minister said MPRC, as the Ministry of Economy’s agency responsible for OGSE industry development, has an important role in coordinating and accelerating efforts to help Malaysian companies enter and grow in overseas markets.
“We must reduce over-reliance on domestic business and position our local OGSE players to capture opportunities in West Asia and other growth markets. MPRC should lead this effort for the OGSE industry, not only in coordination, but also in implementation and tracking real progress on the ground,” he added.
YB Tuan Haji Akmal Nasrullah also noted that while there are various initiatives to support Malaysian companies in expanding abroad, MPRC should serve as the lead agency for the OGSE sector in building capacity, opening market access and helping companies translate overseas opportunities into actual business outcomes.
The National OGSE Industry Blueprint 2021–2030 remains a key policy framework to strengthen the competitiveness, resilience and international presence of Malaysia’s OGSE industry.
Mohd Yazid Ja’afar, President/CEO of MPRC, which is custodian and leads the implementation of the OGSE Blueprint, said MPRC’s efforts through the OGSE Blueprint to facilitate collaborations and partnerships among Malaysian OGSE companies through initiatives such as MPRC Regional Champions Programme (MPRC RCP), OGSE Strategic Partnership Support Programme and Growth Beyond OGSE Programme (GBO Programme) to enable the industry to strengthen its competitiveness to execute projects abroad while continuing to explore opportunities in the energy transition adjacent to the traditional oil & gas space.
These efforts would also support the country’s energy security, affordability and sustainability goals, especially in line with global efforts to build resilience amid increasingly uncertain and volatile conditions.
OGSE Blueprint implementation highlights
On the OGSE Blueprint, Yazid shared that among implementation highlights since 2021 included over RM77.2 million in revenue generated from projects commercialised under the OGSE Development Grant (OGSE DG). First introduced in April 2021, the OGSE DG was renewed under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13), offering a 70:30 matching grant of up to RM250,000 until 2030 designed to help local OGSE small and medium-sized enterprises and mid-tier companies to adopt technology, drive innovation and increase exports.
As of 31 May 2026, other highlights of the OGSE Blueprint implementation since 2021 included:
• More than 600 OGSE companies facilitated for export growth, technology development, access to finance and strategic partnership
• Over 500 OGSE talents trained and upskilled in critical OGSE work sectors
• More than RM2 billion in OGSE export sales generated from MATRADE-organised programmes.
• More than 100 OGSE-related technologies facilitated through initiatives such as the OGSE Technology-Network (OGTEN) and OGSE DG
• Over 400 OGSE companies trained on sustainability and the National OGSE Sustainability Framework Guide (NOS-F Guide).
The OGSE Blueprint Steering Committee met to review the progress of the OGSE Blueprint as of May 2026, with attendees comprising representatives from Government, private sector and other OGSE industry stakeholders including Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), Department of Statistics Malaysia, Economic Planning Unit Sabah, Economic Planning Unit Sarawak, Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS), SMJ Energy Sdn Bhd, Malaysia Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation, Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp), Unit Peneraju Agenda Bumiputera (TERAJU), Malaysian Oil, Gas and Energy Services Council (MOGSC); among others.
